So… I Got Cats (Yes, Really)

So… I Got Cats (Yes, Really)

If you had told me last year that I’d be writing a blog post about my two Persian cats, I would’ve laughed and said, “Wrong guy — I’m a dog person.” Yet here we are, seven months deep into a cat-filled household, and not only am I writing this post… I’m smiling as I do.

Say hello to Cinnamon and Sugar, our two triple-coat Persian cats. Yes, they’re fluffy. Yes, they shed like it’s a competitive sport. And yes, I love them. (There. I said it.)

How Did This Happen?

Let’s back up.

This all started in December — the kids were on winter break, and someone (not naming names) brought up the idea of getting a pet. Naturally, I voted for a dog. Naturally, I lost. It was three votes to one, and democracy, as it turns out, has fur and an attitude.

We agreed to a trial period. “Just a few weeks,” we said. “Let’s see how it goes.” That was seven months ago. Cinnamon and Sugar were just one month old when we brought them home, small enough to fit in your hands, eyes still too big for their faces. Now? They’re eight months old, and they run this house.

Meet the Boys

Let’s start with Cinnamon. He’s named after his brown fur, and he fits every cat stereotype in the book. He’s elegant, independent, and just slightly judgmental. He doesn’t do cuddles unless it’s his idea, he loves staring at birds through the window like he’s planning something, and he’ll swat a spider faster than you can say “Ew.” He’s skittish around loud noises and refuses to go outside. Basically, he’s a dramatic introvert with excellent grooming habits.

Sugar, on the other hand, is a whole different vibe. He’s got a heavy white streak down his back and a soft, brown fluff coat to match. He’s also got zero boundaries when it comes to affection. He will jump into your lap, make biscuits on your stomach (yes, despite my recent keto efforts, there’s still enough surface area for him to work with), and purr like a tiny engine. He’s playful, clingy, and gives off the energy of a sleepy toddler with a sugar rush. He’ll run after a string for three seconds and then collapse like he just ran a marathon.

Life With Cats (A.K.A. Organized Chaos)

Living with cats is… an experience. A fluffy, chaotic, surprisingly adorable experience.

For starters, they’re always hungry. I mean it. They will eat as much as you give them, and then act like you’ve been starving them for days. We started with some fancy imported kibble, then (naively) tried switching to a cheaper brand. Bad idea. They didn’t protest — they just started hiding it under rugs, behind furniture, and in corners like they were plotting a passive-aggressive rebellion. We eventually found their stash, realized the extent of their food snobbery, and landed on Whiskas. They love it. We also give them yogurt and boiled eggs occasionally, because why not.

When they’re not eating or napping, they’re playing. And by playing, I mean engaging in full-blown battle royales that end with one of them sliding dramatically across the floor like a feline WWE star. It’s mostly harmless — they’re siblings, after all — but every now and then I catch myself Googling “Is it normal for cats to try and dropkick each other?”

Playtime also includes chasing string, going feral over laser pointers, and trying to catch birds through a closed window. It’s wildly entertaining. For them and for us.

The Kids and the Cats

One of the unexpected perks of cat ownership? It’s been a fantastic way to teach responsibility.

Each of my daughters has their own cat-related chores — one handles feeding, the other helps with grooming — and for the most part, they’ve taken it seriously. I’ve watched them learn to be gentle, patient, and alert. I’ve seen them worry when the cats sneeze, or jump into action when there’s a hairball emergency. It’s heartwarming. And slightly gross. But mostly heartwarming.

There’s something special about watching your kids bond with animals. It’s messy and sweet and a little chaotic, but it’s the good kind of chaos — the kind that teaches you things you didn’t even know you were missing.

The Not-So-Glamorous Bits

Of course, it’s not all purring and cuddles.

You can’t exactly travel on a whim anymore — someone has to cat-sit. You also have to “hide the cats” every time guests who don’t like pets come over. Plus, they shed. A lot. I’ve basically made peace with the fact that I now own several lint rollers and that every piece of black clothing I own (or the black and white carpet in our living room) is permanently dusted in cat glitter.

And yes, I was the one who didn’t want them in the first place. I argued. I reasoned. I made a compelling PowerPoint presentation (okay, not really — but I could have). I didn’t want the responsibility, the mess, the potential vet bills. But here I am, writing this post — and while they’re not curled up by my feet or on my lap right now, they’ve definitely nestled their way into our daily lives. Into the chaos. Into the routines. Into the quiet little moments that make a house feel like home.

So… Am I a Cat Person Now?

You know what? Maybe I am.

These two furballs have become such an unexpectedly joyful part of our everyday rhythm. They’ve made our house feel more alive. More playful. More… us.

So yeah. I got cats. Cinnamon and Sugar. And I’m glad I did.

Who would have thought the “dog person” would turn into the official cat cuddler of the house? Watching you fall for Cinnamon and Sugar — fur, fluff, and all — has been the real treat. From lint-rolling your shirts to sneaking them snacks (yes, I see you!), you’re a full-on cat dad now.

Looks like they didn’t just steal the sofa — they stole your heart too.😻
And honestly? They’re lucky to have you❣️
